Lalu Prasad Shaw
Lalu Prasad Shaw (b. 1937) is a distinguished Indian artist known for his graceful blend of traditional and modern sensibilities across painting, printmaking, and sculpture. A graduate of the Government College of Art and Craft, Kolkata, Shaw's work is deeply influenced by indigenous Indian art forms like Kalighat Pat paintings and Ajanta murals. He is most celebrated for his stylized portrayals of "Babu and Bibi" figures, capturing the essence of the 19th and early 20th-century Bengali middle class with simple elegance, bold lines, and refined colors, primarily in tempera and gouache. A pivotal figure in the resurgence of printmaking in India during the late 1960s, Shaw has garnered numerous accolades, including the National Award in Graphic Art (1971), and his works are showcased in prestigious collections and exhibitions globally.
